I was hoping to get a chance to learn a little more about my Native American ancestory. Ah well, life happens when you're busy planning it. ~~~~later~~~~ ;)

I made a dreamcatcher once. No, I'm not Native American, but I used to tutor Indian kids so they invited me along to their drumming and other cool stuff. The drumming was a wonderful experience. They even taught me how to track a little (takes years to be good, I'm not even close yet) and took an outdoor survival class with them.
Definitely learn as much as you can because when that stuff is lost, it's lost. I sincerely hope Native Americans keep as much of their cultures as they can.
That's great that you tutored Indian kids and that you tried to learn some about their culture! :) I really don't think it's a prerequisite that you have to be Native American to make a dreamcahter. ;) My great grandmother was Cherokee, I've been to the Resevation in North Carolina, the museum, and the Oconaloftee(sp?) Village. I have a lot to learn though.
Your post on race was awesome I must say and I had a looong response to post, but I got sidetracked and the computer timed me out. lol You know I think that the Native Americans really have the validity above others to play the "race" card. I mean a few strategically placed casinos is only a drop in the retribution bucket.

No lie, I heard that in the 60's and 70's the NC Cherokee Indian Reservation wasn't even teaching the Cherokee language in their schools...they are now. So, maybe through carefull presevation the Native American Culture won't be lost to future generations.
Here's a joke my stepdad tells, he has Native American roots too.

Completely agreed. I think the only group I feel guilty about being an American is the Native Americans. We took their lands and gave them smallpox to make it easier to steal from them.
It's funny, when I have my hair long, I look Native American and got mistaken for Indian all the time. People asked me what tribe I'm from and I say from the Wantabe tribe (accent on the 2nd syllable). it's a joke about Indians that I play along with.
I took a class on Native American history in college. One of the saddest things I've ever been through. The professor was awesome, not playing politics at all. She made it clear that when the whites came, it was an "encounter."
Not a discovery, and not a planned extermination. It was just Indians had good land and happened to be in the way of American greed. Story by story though was heartbreaking.
The class even went into modern times. We read books like Lakota Woman which is one of the saddest books I've ever read. I did my final report on Wounded Knee II in 1973.
